JRP Historical Consulting, LLC (JRP) was founded in 1981 and is one of the oldest and most experienced public history consulting firms in the nation. JRP specializes in a variety of historical research services: historic building and structure survey and evaluation, National Register of Historic Places Section 106 compliance, evaluation of historic properties for the California Register of Historical Resources under CEQA, land use and water resources histories, and archival/data base management for complex research undertakings.
JRP has produced the full range of Section 106 documents including National Register Nominations, National Historic Landmark documentation, Findings of Effect, HAER and HABS documentation, Cultural Resources Management Plans, Memorandums of Agreement, and Programmatic Agreements. JRP has experience consulting with the staff of the Office of Historic Preservation on historic properties documentation for transportation, military, and forest projects and a variety of private undertakings.
JRP works throughout California and has completed projects in every county in the state. Most recently, for example, JRP prepared a state-wide historic context statement for all roadway bridges built in California between 1936 and 1959 for Caltrans and is currently engaged in updating Caltrans' historic bridge inventory for metal truss, concrete arch, suspension, and timber truss bridges.
The company includes twenty personnel including three principals ten
historians/architectural historians, historic preservation specialists, a licensed
preservation architect, graduate and undergraduate level research assistants,
intern(s), and a graphics and mapping technician, as well as other administrative
support personnel.
JRP has the experience to effectively and efficiently undertake historic property surveys and evaluations of all sizes and jobs with a wide range of resource types from individual residences and commercial buildings, farmsteads or industrial sites, canals, dams, roads and bridges to complex historic districts and urban or rural landscapes.
JRP has completed numerous large historic property surveys and evaluations for federal, state and private entities including individual projects involving more than one thousand buildings for highway construction, public transit expansion, and BRAC closure of military installations. JRP's large and experienced staff allows the firm to undertake multiple large-scale undertakings simultaneously and to complete smaller jobs for clients as they arise under tight schedules on an on-call basis.
JRP has been recognized for major projects such as the California Historic Military Buildings and Structures Inventory, funded by the California Military Environmental Coordinating Committee for which the company won the distinguished 2001 Governors Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. In addition to the Governor's award, in 2001 JRP won the California Council for the Promotion of History's Certificate for Meritorious Service, an award that recognizes JRP's long-term contributions to historic preservation and the public history profession in California.
